Hi, I live at 19859 Military Rd in Monticello, Iowa.
My daughter said that one of her friends mother said that the family that died in the blizzard died on our property. Is this true? I was under the impression they died closer to Langworthy. There are two old homesteads still on Military Rd. One in near our home and the other is on the other end of Military Rd closer to Langworthy. Are either of them this families homestead? Our home is the first house on the right when turning on Military Rd off the lower Prairieburg hwy. These old homesteads have always sparked interest in me and any information would be appreciated. A older gentleman had told us quite a few years ago that there was interest in putting up a sign to mark our road but no one ever contacted us to see if such a sign or monument could be placed on our property. Thank You for any information you can give me.

Doug, I am one of the folks from Solon that greeted you on your walk. You mentioned to us that the DAR had plaques along the route and suggested we apply for one. Ruby Jedlicka has done that but we need validation that the route truly went through Solon. Do you have anything that might help us verify this fact. Would appreciate your help - and thanks! Sandy

I'm looking forward to your book! I'm reserching my Great Grandmother, Ursula Fleury and her first husband Rudy Lemm Marugg whose family came to Bowen's Prairie in 1887 to farm. They both moved to Saskatchewan in 1908 when they married, but their childhood would have been in Jones County before that. His parents, Solomon and Christina Lemm Marugg, came from Switzerland in 1887 and established what must have been a dairy. Solomon died in 1904 in Bowen's Prairie and Christina then joined my great grandparents in Saskatchewan. Is Bowens Prairie still a town? Sounds like it's a highway now.
If you have any info on the Fleury family from that era, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to email me.
Best of luck, I've enjoyed your web postings on the history of the area.

Hi
Looking closely at this photo i found out, astonished, that there is a human figure at the top window on the right - did you notice it? Have you added the figure or what is it?

I am absolutely fascinated and exited about your story and journey of the Old Military Road. I was very interested in meeting you at Lot 1 on Saturday, but was busy. Do you have plans of sharing your story soon somewhere else?

I grow more curious about this story and look forward to a book but until then I will continue to read blogs and do some of my own investigation.

I think your journey from Iowa City to Dubuque is something that many, including myself, would love to do and should plan another trip soon.

Thanks for all your work!

I love your idea of walking this distance. Now I do not have any specific places for you to stay each night but rather a suggestion. If you contact your church, they could probably be able to contact other members in those communities. They would create places for you to stay. You could be in someones home and share and exchange knowledge and stories instead of doing this as an isolated group.

Good luck on this quest.

Peace,

Douglas

Please contact me as I have information regarding the creation of Dillon's Furrow handed down thru the family history which seems to be reasonably accurate. My great great grandfather helped plow the furrow. From what has come down to me the cut was actually not created for military purposes but as a landmark to help early settlers find the way to Dubuque to pay taxes. Contact me at genobear01@htomail.com for more info. Very interesting stuff!!! Gene B
