Post # 5 Edinburg and Jones County Historical Society

7/29/07

Today we headed South to Edinburg.  Edinburg is home to the Jones County Historical Society ghost town and Museum.  L.P.  mentioned that was where he got the copies of  Lyman Dillon and Charlotte Dillon’s photos.  L. also mentioned he thought there was a baby high chair of Lyman Dillon’s in the museum….so, with that information, we called J A  and headed to Edinburg.  The museum is normally open from 1 till 5 on Sunday afternoons…sure enough when we got there, they were open.  I took photo’s of the baby chair.  It said it had been made from wood from Lyman Dillon’s saw mill.  There were photo’ s on the wall (same ones L gave me on Saturday)

There was a copy of a painting of Lyman Dillon plowing hanging on the wall, plus a very thorough article from the 100th anniversary of the Monticello Express Byron  F  graciously reprinted for me.  There was also an old map of Monticello with Military Road marked on the map which I took pictures of.  By the end of the afternoon, I had taken 3 or 4 pictures to include in the book, plus the newspaper article with new information in it…..made for another fruitful field trip.  August 18th we have an apointment scheduled w/ someone from the Iowa Archaeology Dept. to discuss Bowens’ Prairie in more depth….
